Does Quran Say Not To Have Non-Muslim Friends??

O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust. (Chapter 5 Al-Maeda:51)

This verse was revealed in the background when Jews of Medina violated their peace treaty with Muslims by conspiring against them with the pagan of Makkah. The said verse is simply telling muslims not to consider Jews or Christians as their protector since at that time they were plotting against Muslims and soughting their protection or close friendship wasn't healthy for Muslims. Since Islam was still in the establishing phase and the influence of those people who rejected Islam would have had negative impacts on Muslims and also Muslims could have been seriously hurt by them because of their bias and their act of passing their secrets to the enemy. However, during the time of peace, Muslims are especially instructed to be courteous and tolerant to all humans regardless of their religion to spread the ideas of justice, human equality, honesty and goodwill as per God's will. Non-Muslim neighbor has been given special rights in Islam. The places of worship of non-muslims are specially protected by the Islamic state along with their wealth, customs, rituals and lives.
